Duties to Democracy
Updated: May 26, 2022
I heard echoes of my mother in Maureen Dowd’s recent column in the New York Times, Too Much Church in the State (May 14, 2022). My mother was a devout Catholic, but she did not proselytize, even with her kids. She encouraged us to adopt her faith, but it was our decision, not hers. So, of course she agreed with Mario Cuomo (quoted in Dowd’s column) regarding the even greater barrier public officials should place between the personal dictates of their faith and their duties to democracy. I paraphrase Cuomo: Laws should protect people’s rights, not a justice’s religious beliefs. Read her column here: https://www.nytimes.com/.../catholic-roe-abortion-supreme...
